45 Quick Base is a run play out of Shotgun Trips with 10 personnel, designed as an inside dive to the HB. The diagram shows a five man surface with the offensive line stepping into a base blocking scheme up front while the backfield action carries the ball on a quick hitting dive path between the tackles. There is no route concept shown at the second level since the three trips receivers and outside WR are not featured in the diagram art, so the primary read is the interior running lane created by the base blocks, with the ball carrier keying the first gap that opens off the double team at the point of attack.
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box, a light box of six or fewer favors the dive hitting for positive yardage. Watch linebacker depth, if they are sitting at five yards or deeper reading run/pass off the mesh point, the interior lane opens quicker. This play struggles against gap sound defenses with a Mike linebacker sitting square in the A or B gap, since there is no lead blocker or misdirection to manipulate the flow. Look for user controlled defenders crashing down early, a disciplined user linebacker who stays home on the dive can blow this up before the back reaches the line. Nickel and dime fronts with light boxes against Trips personnel are prime spots to attack, since the extra DB removes a run defender from the interior gaps.
Use this out of Trips Shotgun on early downs when you want to keep the defense honest against your pass heavy Trips concepts like Cross Flood or Four Verticals.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider hitting an RPO tag like RPO Alert Bubble instead of running into a loaded front.
Since this is a straight dive with no play action tag, hide it in your play calling sequence behind RPO Zone Alert Screen and Inside Zone so defenses cannot key run versus pass off formation alone.
Attack light boxes on second and short or third and short, the quick dive hits fast enough to punish defenses that sit back in coverage shells expecting Stick or Slant Spacing.
Pair this play with HB Sweep and HB Mid Draw in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run fits out of Trips.
