Middle Slant out of Shotgun Trips 10 personnel sends the backside X on an outside release into a deep comeback breaking away from the numbers, while the three trips receivers work an underneath combo: the inside slot cuts on a shallow slant across the middle, the outside trips receiver runs a vertical seam that bends up the numbers, and the nearest trips receiver to the line releases flat and works up the sideline on a wheel route out of the backfield alignment. This is a man beater built to attack natural picks created by the trips bunch, with the shallow slant and wheel combo designed to rub off man defenders while the seam route stresses any linebacker or safety trying to rob the crosser. The primary read progression starts with the middle slant for a quick underneath completion, then climbs to the wheel route if a man defender gets rubbed off, and finally works to the backside comeback as a hot progression against a soft corner or blown coverage.
Pre-snap, check corner alignment on the trips bunch: tight man technique with no safety help over the top is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, since a linebacker sitting shallow in a hook zone will squat on the middle slant and force the quarterback to abandon the primary read. Key the safety rotation after the snap: if the single high safety rotates late to help over the slot, the wheel route behind it can get open for a big gap in coverage. Man match coverage that trails the trips bunch tight and fights through the rub will shut down both the slant and the wheel, forcing the quarterback to the backside comeback as the only outlet. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the backside edge can beat this play before the deep comeback develops, so watch for a slanting defensive end or overload pressure to that side pre-snap.
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you need a quick underneath answer against man coverage.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man match or off man on the trips side, since the rub concept between the slant and wheel only works cleanly against tight man technique.
If you see a single high safety with man defenders on the trips bunch, hot route the seam runner to a deeper post to stack on top of the slant and create a natural pick.
Against zone shells, work the backside comeback route immediately since the middle slant will sit down in a zone and get swarmed by underneath defenders.
Pair this play with 45 Quick Base or Slant Spacing in the same drive to condition the defense to bite on the quick slant, then hit them with Read Special or PA Read once they start jumping the shallow route.
