Breakdown

Bubble Screen out of Shotgun Trips is a quick-hitting screen pass designed to get the ball into space on the perimeter. The diagram shows the outside trips receiver running a vertical stem to clear space and occupy the deep defender, while the two inner trips receivers execute the bubble action: the middle slot bubbles out behind the line of scrimmage and the inside slot releases upfield to seal off the second level defender as a lead blocker. The backside receiver runs a straight vertical route to hold single coverage away from the concept. This is a zone beater at its core, punishing soft zone drops and off man coverage by getting the ball out before the underneath defenders can close, with the primary read going immediately to the bubbling receiver in space.

Defensive Reads

Watch for cornerbacks pressed at the line on the trips side, since press man coverage can disrupt the bubble release and blow up the timing before the blocker gets there. Identify linebacker depth before the snap, if the flat defender or nickel is sitting shallow and reading the backfield, he can trigger fast and make this play a loss. Look for zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with soft corners, these are the ideal matchups since the underneath defenders have to cover more ground before closing on the bubble. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flying downhill toward the trips bunch, an aggressive user lurk or spy can jump the route and turn this into a turnover opportunity for the defense. Man coverage with an overhang defender sitting on the slot receivers is the biggest red flag, since it removes the blocking angle advantage the bubble concept relies on.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage situations where the defense is likely to sit back in zone coverage or show soft cushion at the line. Check the cornerback depth pre-snap, if you see a corner playing seven or more yards off the trips side with no immediate blitz indicators, this play has room to develop. Snap the ball quickly and throw to the bubble receiver as soon as he turns upfield, do not wait for blockers to fully set because timing wins this rep over power. Pair this with 60 Go or Four Verticals from the same Trips Shotgun set so defenses respect the vertical shell and cannot sit on the bubble concept every snap. Use this play to counter aggressive blitz-heavy defenses that bring extra rushers, since the quick perimeter throw negates interior pressure and turns a blitz into a numbers advantage on the edge.
