Breakdown

Inside Zone from Shotgun Trips 10 personnel is a straightforward zone run play with the offensive line stepping in unison toward the play side to create running lanes based on the defensive front. The lone isolated WR to the left and the trips receivers to the right hold their positions as blockers or decoys rather than running routes, keeping the focus entirely on the interior blocking scheme. The HB reads his blocks off the RG or center and picks a lane, so the primary read progression is patient and simple: identify the first crease from the double team blocks at the point of attack, then bounce outside if the backside cutback lane opens up.

Defensive Reads

Check the defensive line spacing pre-snap, a light box with only six or seven defenders in the front means this run has a clean path to the second level. Watch the middle linebacker depth, if he is sitting too far off the ball or flowing hard to one gap you can cut back against the grain for a big gain. Heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing the A and B gaps can blow this play up before the double teams get set, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz looks. Nickel and dime packages with lighter boxes are the best matchup for this play since there are fewer bodies to account for at the point of attack. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or crashing down hard off the edge, since that can cancel the cutback lane before the HB commits to a gap.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early so you can diagnose run blitzes before the snap.

Trips alignment naturally pulls extra defenders toward that side, so look to run the play away from overloaded fronts when the defense stacks the strength.

Pair Inside Zone with RPO Zone Alert Screen and RPO Alert Bubble out of the same Trips look so the defense has to respect both the run and the quick perimeter throw.

Stick to first and second down or short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages.

Mix in HB Sweep and HB Counter from this same set to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction and prevent them from crashing down on the zone read every snap.
