Breakdown

Slot Drive out of Shotgun Trips is a Cover 4 beater built around a deep drive concept from the trips side. The two inside trips receivers run a drive combo: the middle receiver breaks in on a deep dig that crosses the field while the inner slot runs a shallow cross underneath it, and the outer trips receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline. The backside single receiver runs a corner route stretching the defense vertically, while the running back releases into a short check release flat route as the underneath outlet. Progression starts with the deep dig off the drive concept, works down to the shallow crosser, and ends with the check release flat if the underneath defenders sit on the crosser.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is playing four deep zone shells, since the dig route is designed to sit in the seam between the safeties and the linebackers in Cover 4. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap. If he sinks deep to wall the dig, the shallow crosser underneath becomes the easy answer. Man coverage with no help over the top is a problem for this concept since the dig and shallow cross can get picked off by trailing defenders in tight man technique. Key the flat defender's reaction to the running back's check release. If he crashes hard on the flat, the underneath window for the shallow cross opens up. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the deep middle third, since that defender can undercut the dig route if he reads the quarterback's eyes early.

Usage Tips

Use this against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where safeties sit deep and linebackers have to cover the shallow drive route, since the dig will find soft grass over the middle.

Hot route the check release back to a flat route earlier if the defense shows heavy pressure looks, giving you a quick outlet against nano blitzes.

This play is best on second and medium to second and long, or third and short, since the dig takes a beat to develop and needs a clean pocket.

Pair Slot Drive with Slot Corner or Fade Stops from the same set so the defense cannot key on the drive concept once you have shown it a few times.

If the user drops a defender into the shallow crosser's lane, look immediately to the corner route on the backside for a one-on-one shot against a single high safety.
