This is a straight dropback pass play, not an RPO or play-action look, and the primary read progression starts with the drive route out of trips, works to the deep crosser sitting behind the second level, and comes back to the backside if the safeties squeeze the middle of the field.
Defensive Reads
Read the deep safeties at the snap, if they stay high and hold their quarters landmarks the drive route will settle in the void between the second and third level defenders. Watch the flat defender to the trips side, if he widens with the outside receiver the shallow drive route has a clean throwing lane underneath him. Key the middle linebacker's drop, a slow or shallow drop means he can undercut the crossing route, so be ready to hitch the drive route or reset to the backside progression. This play struggles against Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where a safety rolls down into the underneath hook zone, since that extra defender can rob the drive route's window. Man coverage with an aggressive user blitz off the edge is the biggest threat, since the drive route takes time to develop and a free rusher forces an early or inaccurate throw.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties split evenly, that alignment confirms Cover 4 or Cover 2 shell and tells you the drive route will have room to sit in the zone pockets between linebackers and safeties.
Use the flat hot route on the backside receiver against man coverage to give yourself a quick outlet if the drive route gets carried by a hard flat corner.
This play shines on second and medium to long or third and medium because the drive concept needs a beat to develop, so avoid calling it on obvious quick game downs.
Pair Slot Drive KO with Slot Drive or Middle Slant earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying the shallow crosser, then hit the deeper drive route for explosive plays once linebackers jump the underneath routes.
Combine with Four Verticals or 60 Go from the same set to keep the safeties honest deep, which opens up the drive concept underneath when the defense starts rotating extra help over the top.
