RNS Streak X Shallow is a trips concept out of Shotgun that isolates the backside X receiver on a shallow crossing route while the three receiver stack works vertical on the trips side. The near trips receiver runs a streak, the middle trips receiver breaks outside on a corner style route after a stem inside, and the outside trips receiver takes the top off the defense on a pure vertical. This is a man beater at its core, using the shallow drag to attack man leverage and create natural rubs while the vertical routes on the trips side stretch zone defenders high, so it doubles as a zone beater against soft shells. Primary read progression starts with the shallow cross for a quick underneath answer, then works to the intermediate corner breaking route before going to the deep streaks if the coverage is stacked underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 1, since both leave the deep middle vulnerable to the streak from the outside trips receiver if the free safety is not disciplined. Watch the flat defender on the trips side, if he widens too quickly to take away the corner route, that opens a throwing lane underneath for the shallow cross. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, a linebacker who sits shallow or spies the quarterback can undercut the shallow cross and force you to hold the ball longer. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the streaks, especially if the corner on the outside trips receiver is playing with inside leverage. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 looks with disciplined zone drops, since the deep routes get bracketed and the shallow cross runs into a crowded underneath zone with defenders sinking to their landmarks.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap to identify one high versus two high shells, since a single high safety tells you the streaks on the trips side have a better shot at winning deep.

Use the shallow cross as your answer versus man coverage and blitz looks because it clears the underneath quickly and gives you a built in hot route against pressure.

If the defense shows zone drop with linebackers sitting on the shallow, progress immediately to the corner route from the middle trips receiver for a natural window in the flat to intermediate area.

Pair this play with RNS Georgia Mesh or Mtn Stick in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot key on the shallow cross every snap and have to respect both the crossing action and the vertical stems.

Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a play that has both a quick underneath answer and a deep shot built into the same design.
