Shotgun Trips puts three receivers to one side with a single X isolated on the backside, all out of 10 personnel (four wide, one back, no tight end). That alignment is the core difference from balanced sets like Shotgun Wing Slot or 2x2 looks: the strength side gives you natural stacks and bunched spacing for flood and drive concepts, while the backside X gets a true one on one with no help defender within twenty yards. Because it is 10 personnel, you are forcing the defense into nickel or dime, which means lighter boxes and slower linebackers matched onto your slot receivers.
The play list here is one of the deepest in the game, covering every concept family a competitive user needs. You get flood and levels stress on the trips side (Cross Flood, Levels, Slot Drive, Slot Drive KO, Slant Spacing, Air Raid Under), vertical stretch (Four Verticals, 60 Go, Stick Wheel, Fake Screen Wheel), quick game triggers (Stick, Curls, RNS Hitches, Middle Slant, Fade Stops), and a full RPO package (RPO Alert Screen, RPO Zone Alert Screen, RPO Alert Bubble, RPO Read Screen, RPO Peek Stick) that lets you attack overloaded boxes without ever changing formation.
The matchup math is what makes Trips lethal. Three receivers to one side almost always leaves a linebacker or safety accounting for your number three, which is a mismatch you can attack immediately with a hot route corner or drag. Meanwhile the isolated X can be flipped to a fade, slant, or in route based on whether the corner presses. Add Inside Zone, HB Mid Draw, HB Counter, HB Sweep, and Speed Option to the run game and the set stays balanced enough that opponents cannot just sit in dime and rush four.
Read the alignment over your number three receiver pre snap. If it is a linebacker, hot route him to a corner or drag out of Stick or Slant Spacing. If it is a safety, work the backside X instead.
Motion your slot across the formation to identify coverage. If a defender follows step for step you are in man, so shift to Cross Flood, Middle Slant, or the isolated X slant. If the defense stays put, run Curls, Stick, or Air Raid Under.
Use the RPO calls (RPO Alert Screen, RPO Zone Alert Screen, RPO Alert Bubble) on early downs against six man boxes to force the defense to stay honest, then hit Four Verticals or Stick Wheel out of the exact same look once they start crowding.
Slide your protection toward the trips side and block your back to the open edge when you suspect a nano or A gap overload, especially on Four Verticals and 60 Go where you need extra time.
On third and medium, Slot Corner and Fade Stops are your highest percentage calls against soft zone, while HB Slip Screen and WR Mid Screen are the best answers when opponents bring five or more and vacate the middle.
