Breakdown

60 Go out of Shotgun Trips is a vertical stretch concept built to attack single high and man coverage shells. The lone receiver to the backside runs a straight go route up the sideline, while on the trips side the outside receiver clears vertically on his own go route, the inside slot runs a quick out to the flat, and the middle trips receiver breaks on a skinny post/dig that crosses through the middle of the field, shown in red on the diagram. The primary read starts with the skinny post from the slot working against the middle of the field, then progresses to the two outside go routes if the safety bites down or the corner gets beat deep.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage without safety help over the top is the biggest liability, since the skinny post and both go routes can win vertically against a trailing corner. Watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the honey hole area, since he can jump the skinny post if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender can take away the post read, so be ready to reset your eyes to the outside go routes if the middle safety stays home. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket before the vertical routes develop, so identify pre-snap blitz looks like a nano blitz or overload pressure and consider a hot route protection adjustment. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze both outside go routes, making the post to the trips side the more efficient answer against that shell.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and long when you need an explosive shot play and the defense is likely to sit back in a two high shell.

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see a single high safety, prioritize the skinny post since the middle of the field will be vacated by man coverage.

If both safeties are deep and rotating to the trips side, work the backside go route immediately since it is likely singled up against man coverage.

Pair this play with Stick or Slot Drive earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting on shorter routes, then come back to 60 Go to hit the post or a go route once they start jumping underneath concepts.

Motion or hot route the flat route from the slot receiver into a shallow cross if you need an extra underneath option against zone drops that clog the post window.
