Mtn HB Draw is a delayed run concept out of Shotgun Trips 10 personnel designed to punish aggressive pass rush lanes and spread out linebackers. The offensive line sells pass protection for a beat before opening running lanes, while the three receivers to the trips side hold coverage defenders and linebackers with vertical or intermediate releases so they cannot crash down on the mesh point. The primary read is patience: the HB presses the mesh point, reads the initial flow of the defensive line and linebackers, and picks the cutback lane once the second level defenders commit to their run fits or drop into coverage.
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers who upfield rush hard on every snap since this draw is built to gash that aggression. Identify if the defense is in a two high shell versus single high. Two high shells with light boxes are prime for this draw since there are fewer defenders to read the mesh point. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap. If he sits at depth reading run/pass instead of attacking downhill, the cutback lane will be there once he commits. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers dropping into passing lanes create natural running lanes since second level defenders are moving away from the box. This play is shut down by disciplined defenses that spy the HB or use a linebacker to sit at the mesh point, and it struggles badly against run blitzes or Cover 0 where extra defenders are already stacked in the box pre-snap.
Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations like second and long to exploit defenders who are keying dropback pass sets and rushing upfield.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense shows five or six defenders crashing the line with no discipline, this play hits fast because they will overrun the mesh point.
Use the HB Draw as a changeup after establishing dropback passing concepts from this set like Stick, FL Dig, or Curl Post Wheel so the defense stays honed in on pass rush lanes.
Do not force the run into stacked boxes or Cover 0 blitz looks. If you see extra defenders creeping into the box pre-snap, audible to a quick game concept or RPO Alert Bubble instead.
Let the play develop for a full count before deciding to take off. Do not user the HB immediately off the snap since the blocking scheme needs time to set up the cutback lanes.
