Breakdown

Air Raid Under out of Shotgun Trips 10 personnel shows four vertical stems with a built in coverage adjustment. The backside iso receiver runs a straight Go up the sideline, while the trips side stacks a deep Seam, a shallow drag/out breaker running underneath, and a flat out cutting to the sideline off the line of scrimmage. This is a Four Verts based zone beater designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by flooding the deep and intermediate levels simultaneously, with the primary read progression starting at the seam route for the coverage void behind linebackers and in front of safeties, then working to the backside Go for a one on one shot, and finally checking down to the underneath out or flat route against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap, this signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and opens the seam window between the flat defender and the deep half safety. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the out route the seam is wide open behind him. Key the middle linebacker's depth, a shallow drop invites the seam throw while a deep drop suggests a zone blitz look that you should attack with the quick out. Single high safety alignment with press corners signals man coverage, in this case take the backside Go route matchup or work the underneath out as a quick separation throw. Beware disguised Cover 3 buzz calls where the safety rotates late, if the corner over the trips side sinks deep and the safety cheats down, check down immediately to the flat or out route instead of forcing the seam.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, two high shells tell you to attack the seam route immediately since it splits the difference between the corner and safety.

Against single high looks, lean on the backside Go route for a shot play if your CB1 has a size or speed advantage.

Use the underneath out route as your answer versus Cover 3 sink zones since the corner has to choose between the flat and the seam behind him.

Motion or shift pre-snap to confirm man versus zone, if defenders slide with the trips bunch it is man and you should widen the flat route as a rub option.

Pair this play with Curl Post Wheel or Stick Wheel in your call sheet to keep defenders guessing between vertical stress and combo route concepts from the same trips formation.
