Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check for an extra man crashing down, since that number determines whether the offense should pull the ball. Watch the flat defender's depth and width post-snap, since if he sits too far inside the flat route will be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Identify if the defense is playing man coverage across the trips formation, since a linebacker matched on the seam sitter is a mismatch the QB should exploit immediately. Look for a nickel or slot corner sinking hard on the seam route in zone, which signals the flat should be the answer instead. Beware of a blitz off the backside edge, since the single receiver's route does not help protection and a fast pressure package can force a rushed decision before the stick read develops.

Usage Tips

Check the defender count in the box before the snap to decide whether the run or pass side of the RPO is live.

Against man coverage, target the seam sitter since he creates natural leverage on a linebacker or nickel defender who has to run with him.

Against zone shells, work the stick concept low to high or high to low depending on where the flat defender widens, since the flat route and seam sit occupy different zone landmarks.

Use this on early downs to stay ahead of the chains, since the built in run option punishes light boxes without needing a called run play.

Pair this with Stick and Mtn Stick later in a series once the defense has seen the RPO look, forcing them to respect both the give read and the dropback stick concept from the same formation shell.
