Breakdown

PA Read out of Shotgun Trips is a play-action shot play built off a run fake to hold the linebackers. The backside X runs a shallow drag across the field while the trips side stacks a deep corner/post route on top of a shallow crosser underneath, creating a natural high low read on the boundary corner or flat defender. The primary progression starts with the deep corner breaking route from the slot, then works down to the shallow crossing route underneath if the deep shot is not there, with the backside drag as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety shell pre-snap, this tells you the deep corner route from the slot has a one on one matchup you can attack. If the defense shows two deep safeties, expect the corner route to be capped, so plan on working the underneath shallow crosser instead. Man coverage on the slot receiver running the corner route is where this play hurts defenses most, especially with no safety help over the top. Sell the run fake with a hard commitment on the play action animation to freeze linebackers before your eyes go to the deep route.

Check safety depth pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the trips side, the backside drag becomes your friendly shot play answer.

Use hot routes to convert the shallow crosser into a deeper option if you are facing soft zone coverage that sits underneath the route.

Pair this play with HB Sweep or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play action fake actually threatens the defense and linebackers respect the run.

Best called on second and medium or early down situations where defenses are not expecting a deep shot, giving you explosive play potential off run tendencies.
