PA Read out of Shotgun Trips is a play-action pass built off a run fake to hold the linebackers and attract the safety before the routes develop downfield. From the trips side, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the tight end or slot underneath breaks into a shallow drag that crosses the field, and the backside single receiver runs an intermediate out breaking route. The play-action fake and the crossing action give it a man beater identity, since the shallow drag creates natural rub traffic and the corner route stretches the boundary defender vertically, with the primary read starting on the corner route before working down to the shallow crosser underneath.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard on the run fake he cannot get width to wall off the shallow drag, so that route becomes an easy user catch Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high leaves the corner route in a soft spot against zone but two high with press corners takes away the outside vertical Key the flat defender or nickel corner on the trips side, if he sinks into a zone drop he can jump the shallow crosser and blow up the underneath read User a linebacker or safety to lurk the shallow drag since that route sits in a shallow window that many CPU and online defenders leave open against play action Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge, since the play action drop takes extra time and a contain blitzer or spy can collapse the pocket before the corner route breaks open
Usage Tips
Sell the play fake by holding the analog stick through the run animation so linebackers bite and safeties creep, this is what opens the corner route against man coverage
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage where run fakes carry the most weight against aggressive defensive fronts
Pre snap, check for a single high safety, if the safety is shaded to the trips side bail out of the deep corner read and go straight to the shallow drag underneath
Hot route the backside out route into a deeper comeback against teams that sit soft zones on that side to keep the defense honest
Pair this with Inside Zone or HB Sweep out of the same Shotgun Trips look to keep defenses guessing between run and play action, then dial up RPO Alert Screen when they start selling out on the pass fake
