Breakdown

Slant Spacing out of Shotgun Trips sends the backside X on a lone slant to the boundary while the trips side runs a classic spacing concept: the inner slot cuts underneath on a quick out to the sideline, the middle trips receiver runs a shallow settle route in the flat/hook area, and the outside trips receiver stems vertical before breaking to the corner. This is a pure pass play built as both a Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater, using horizontal spacing to stress zone defenders who have to cover multiple levels at once. The primary read progression starts with the backside slant if the defense shows man coverage or a soft corner, then works to the trips side settle route as the hi-lo/spacing read against zone, before climbing to the deep corner route as the shot play if the safety bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 4 and tells you the settle route and corner route will have natural spacing windows against the underneath defenders. If the corner over the backside X is playing tight man coverage, expect the slant to be jumped by a user-controlled defender sitting on the route, so be ready to move to the trips side read. Zone defenses that use a Cover 3 shell with a single deep safety will struggle to cover the settle route and the vertical stem into the corner simultaneously, creating the spacing conflict this play is designed to exploit. Man coverage with underneath linebackers spying or blitzing off the edge can disrupt the timing of the slant, so check for A gap or edge pressure looks pre-snap and be ready to throw the slant early before the rush arrives. Lurking defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone can jump the settle route, so read the depth of the underneath defenders after the snap before committing to that throw.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check the corner alignment on the backside X: if he is playing off man coverage, the slant is a quick answer against a nano blitz or man beater look. Identify the coverage shell by watching the deep safeties: if you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, expect Cover 4 and target the settle route in the spacing window underneath the corners. Hot route the middle trips receiver into a deeper sit route against zone-heavy defenses that sink their linebackers, since the spacing concept lives in the soft area behind the underneath defenders. Use this on early downs to set up explosive shot plays like 60 Go or Four Verticals from the same formation, since the quick game tempo forces defenders to respect the short routes and opens up the vertical shots later in the series. On third and short, prioritize the slant and settle route combo for a high percentage completion, and save the corner route for third and medium when defenders bite on the underneath stuff.
