Playbooks

Flanker Close is a 10 personnel Shotgun set that pulls the flanker down into a tight, condensed alignment next to the tackle instead of stretching him to the numbers. Four receivers on the field with a single back next to the quarterback means the defense has to declare its coverage rules against a reduced split, and that reduced split is the entire point of the set. Compressed splits shorten the distance every route needs to travel to hit the intended landmark, which is why the playbook here is stacked with quick rhythm concepts like Stick, Escape, Bench, and the Spot family. You are not asking receivers to win 20 yards down the sideline, you are asking them to win two yards of leverage in the middle of the field where zone defenders are already stacked on top of each other.
Where other Shotgun sets spread the field horizontally to isolate a single receiver on an island, Flanker Close does the opposite: it bunches traffic so defenders in man coverage collide and zone droppers get stressed by overlapping route depths. Mesh Spot, Dragon Spacing, and Slot Choice Spot all attack the same window at different levels, forcing the user defender to pick one and giving you the other. The RNS Switch family (RNS Switch Dig, RNS Switch Curl, RNS Switch Curl Flat) uses the tight alignment to run natural switch releases that man defenders cannot cleanly trail without rubbing, and those switches are your primary answer to Cover 1 and Cover 2 Man.
The run game is not window dressing here. Inside Zone, HB Counter, and HB Sweep all benefit from the extra blocker leverage created by the condensed side, and the Power HB and 3DRB tags mean this set works with both a bruiser and a receiving back depending on your roster. PA Curl Drag gives you a play-action shot off the same run looks, and the Gadget tag opens up trickery when opponents start crowding the box to stop the counter and sweep.
Read the safeties first: two high tells you to go to Mesh Spot or Dragon Spacing to attack the vacated middle, single high tells you to go to the RNS Switch concepts for the rub.
On third and four to seven, Stick and Slot Choice Spot are your money calls, and hot routing the back to a flat or angle route gives you a free outlet against any blitz.
Motion the condensed receiver out wide pre snap to diagnose man versus zone, then snap it immediately if a defender follows him and you have a one on one on the boundary.
Establish HB Counter and Inside Zone early so PA Curl Drag actually holds the linebackers, otherwise the play action rollout gives the defense a free run at your quarterback.
When an opponent starts crowding the condensed side to kill the Spot family, flip to Weak Flood or Bench and work the opposite sideline high low, and keep the Gadget play in your back pocket for a second half tempo change.
