Breakdown

Slot Choice Spot out of Shotgun Flanker Close is a five man spot concept built to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 3. The backside receiver runs a vertical clear route, the outside receiver on the strong side runs a corner route stemming outside to attack the flat to deep boundary, the slot receiver runs a choice route working from an outside break back to the middle for a settle in the void, and the tight end or attached receiver runs a flat route underneath. The lone running back stays in as a check release blocker on a delayed release up the seam. Primary read progression starts with the choice route sitting in the zone hole, then works to the corner route against soft coverage, then bails down to the flat as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the slot receiver, a single high safety with corners playing off suggests zone coverage which sets up the choice route as your first read. Post snap key the underneath linebackers, if they widen with the flat route the choice route will settle into open grass in the middle void. Watch for a lurking Cover 3 defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, this is the primary defender who can jump the choice route if he reads your quarterback's eyes early. Against man coverage look for the corner press on the choice receiver, tight coverage there means you should progress quickly to the corner route or flat since the choice route will not separate. Man coverage with underneath linebackers blitzing off the edge is the biggest threat to this play since it removes the checkdown protection and forces a quick decision before the route develops.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell since the choice route sits perfectly in the zone hole against three deep shells with only two underneath defenders to the play side. If you see man coverage with the corner playing tight on the slot receiver, hot route the choice to a slant or speed up the break to beat the leverage before the defender can recover. Use this on second and medium or third and short since the choice route and flat route give you two high percentage completions underneath the sticks. Combine this with Y Sail or Z Spot in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the flat and corner combinations, then come back to Slot Choice Spot later in the series once linebackers start jumping the flat routes. Watch the running back check release, if the defense brings a blitz off the edge you may need to keep him in as an extra blocker instead of releasing him up the seam.
