Breakdown

Weak Flood is a three level flood concept run to the weak side of the formation out of Shotgun Flanker Close with 10 personnel. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers as a clear out, while the two receivers on the strong side stack a corner route over a deep out and a flat route underneath, creating three horizontal levels for the quarterback to read. The running back releases on a check release to the flat as a blue route, giving a fourth outlet if the underneath flood defenders jump the flat route. This is a classic Cover 3 beater since it stretches the deep third defender and the flat defender with three routes breaking to the same side, and the primary read progresses from the corner route to the deep out underneath it and finally down to the flat.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the flood side vulnerable to the three level stretch. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the deep out route the running back check release into the flat will be open underneath him. Key the deep third cornerback, if he stays flat footed reading the quarterback the corner route will win over the top for an explosive gain. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat zone, since that lurk can jump the check release route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. This concept struggles against two high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 since the extra deep defender can help over the top on the corner route and take away the top of the flood.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and medium to long when you expect single high safety looks since the flood side overloads the deep third defender. Read the cornerback over the corner route pre-snap, if he is playing off with outside leverage the deep out sitting underneath him will be wide open. Hot route the backside vertical into a dig or drag if you see two high safeties rotating to that side, since the clear out route becomes useless against two deep coverage. Use the running back check release to the flat as your answer against a blitz, since he gives the quarterback a quick outlet before the protection breaks down. Pair this with Y Sail or Z Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing on flood concepts, then mix in HB Counter or Inside Zone to punish linebackers who start cheating toward the flood side.
