Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Flanker Close (10 personnel) gives you a five man route concept built around the classic mesh crossing pattern underneath and a spot combo to the closed side. The two inside receivers run shallow crossers that mesh at the same depth just past the line, the outside receiver to the closed side works a corner route up the sideline off the stack, and the backside receiver runs a vertical clear out to open space underneath. This is a certified man beater thanks to the natural pick action on the mesh crossers, but it also holds up against zone since the shallow crosses sit underneath linebackers and the corner route stretches the boundary defender vertically. Primary read starts with the mesh crossers working from the closed side out, then progresses to the corner route if the safety bites down on the shallow stuff.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety depth and leverage, a single high safety cheating toward the corner route side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the mesh crossers should have room underneath. If both safeties are showing deep halves at the snap, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4, which means the corner route into the boundary is your best answer since underneath zone defenders will squeeze the mesh combo. Post-snap, identify any user controlled defender flowing hard to the mesh point since that is the classic strategy to blow up this concept, if you see that happen early get off the shallow crossers and climb the ladder to the corner route. Man coverage with inside linebackers trying to trail the crossers almost always results in a pick, so if the defense stays in man across the board this play should hit quickly underneath. Look for a delayed blitz or a spy on the quarterback, since the mesh action takes a beat to develop and interior pressure can force an early checkdown before the routes fully separate.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment or a linebacker shaded on the slot, since the mesh crossers create natural rubs that shed man defenders almost automatically.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, key the flow of the underneath zone defenders and throw the mesh crosser into the void created as those zone droppers widen with the corner route.

Hot route the backside vertical clear out into a deep drag if you are facing heavy zone shells with a rat linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, this gives you another answer against a lurking Mike linebacker.

Use this play on second and medium to third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone, since the mesh combo will consistently pick up chunks of yardage against soft zone drops.

Pair this call with Y Cross or Weak Flood earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on crossing concepts, then hit Mesh Spot again once they start jumping the shallow routes.
