The offensive line steps in unison playside to create combo blocks and seal running lanes, with no receiver routes shown since this is a designed ground concept. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged, following the natural give of the zone blocks rather than a predetermined hole.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap check linebacker depth, if they are stacked tight to the line expect an aggressive gap fill and be ready to bounce outside. Watch for safety rotation into the box, an eight man front or heavy blitz package can blow up inside zone before the double teams set, so have a hot route or audible ready. Post snap key the play side defensive tackle and mike linebacker, if the user jumps the frontside gap the natural cutback lane backside is usually wide open. Run this out of 10 personnel to bait the defense into lighter boxes since Flanker Close still shows spread receiver splits pre snap. Check the box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light run against base or nickel fronts. Use the left stick to press the play side hole first and only cut back if the linebacker flow commits hard, patience is key with true zone runs. Pair this with Bench or Y Sail from the same set on early downs so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick passing game, keeping linebackers honest. Best called on first and second down in normal or ahead of the sticks situations where you want to control tempo and set up play action shots off the same look later in the drive.
