PA Curl Drag out of Shotgun Flanker Close uses a play-action fake to hold linebackers before releasing three receivers into a layered route combo. The two inside receivers run curls that sit down at intermediate depth on the same hitch timing, while the outside receiver rips a drag across the field underneath the linebacker level. This is a play-action pass built to attack zone drops and hesitant man defenders, with the drag serving as the primary read against man coverage and the curls working as the answer versus zone once the linebackers sink.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth pre-snap: two deep safeties signal zone drops that leave the drag as the primary void, while a single high safety suggests man coverage or a run blitz look. Watch linebacker spacing before the snap. Stacked or tight linebackers who bite on the play-action open up the drag lane immediately. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender flowing to the flat or shallow crossing lane, since that lurk threat is the main counter to the drag read. Cover 3 with linebackers sinking into the curl windows can clog both intermediate throws, so be ready to check down to the drag earlier in the progression. Man coverage with underneath linebackers spying the backfield can jump the drag route, so look for the near curl sitting down behind the sink as the adjustment.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake by holding the play-action animation out fully before hitting the drag, especially against aggressive run fits.
Read the flow of the linebackers immediately after the fake: if they bite hard on the run action, the drag will be wide open crossing the field.
Against zone shells, work from the drag to the near curl and then to the deep curl in a quick progression since the two curls stack the same window at different points in the route.
Use this play on early downs (1st and 2nd) when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake, then pair it with Inside Zone or HB Sweep to keep defenses honest.
Combine this with Mesh Spot or Stick from the same set to give the defense a similar pre-snap look with a different route answer, keeping linebackers guessing on run versus pass.
