Breakdown

0 1 Trap out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel is a designed trap run that pulls an interior blocker across the formation to kick out the first defender past the center, letting the HB follow through the natural cutback lane. The diagram shows four wide receivers running vertical stems to hold corners and safeties deep, clearing out the box and forcing the defense to defend the run with light numbers underneath. This is a pure run play with no pass option, and the primary read progression for the HB is to press the mesh point, read the trap block on the play side defensive lineman, and pick the crease between the pulling guard and the down blocks before working vertically.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify the alignment of the interior defensive linemen since a 3 technique or 4i shading toward the play side aggressive gap is the primary trigger for the trap block to work. Check linebacker depth, if the middle linebacker is sitting tight to the line in run support this play struggles to find a clean crease, but if he is playing deeper or reading run flow he can be sealed by the puller. Post snap, defensive tackles that fire straight upfield without holding their gap get trapped easily, so aggressive one gap penetration schemes are the most vulnerable to this concept. User controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing down hard on the mesh point can blow up the trap before the puller connects, so avoid this play if the user is showing early aggression toward the line. Two gapping defensive tackles or disciplined gap control fronts, especially in odd fronts with a nose tackle reading the center, tend to shut down the trap lane and force the HB to bounce outside into unblocked flow.

Usage Tips

Call this out of 10 personnel to bait light boxes since defenses often sub in nickel or dime packages against four wide receivers, leaving fewer run defenders inside.

Use it on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when the defense shows a two high safety shell, since that usually means fewer defenders in the box to disrupt the trap block.

Watch for a 3 technique or 4i defensive lineman crashing hard upfield, that penetration is exactly what the trap block is designed to punish, so let the play develop instead of bailing early.

Pair this with HB Draw and Mtn HB Draw from the same set to keep defenders honest on delayed handoffs, then mix in 0 1 Trap to attack a different gap once the defense starts keying draw timing.

Avoid calling this into stacked box looks with extra linebackers or a defensive lineman shaded directly over the trap gap, since immediate penetration there kills the play before the puller arrives.
