Breakdown

Slot Pivot from Singleback Spread 10 personnel shows a five route concept built to attack both man and zone coverage. The backside X receiver runs a hitch/pivot back to the sideline while the backside slot clears vertically up the seam on a go route. On the play side the outside receiver runs an out route breaking to the sideline, the inline slot runs a pivot out of the backfield area that curls back toward the flat, and the TE/slot works up the seam before bending outside on a corner-breaking route. The primary read starts with the seam route up the middle, then works to the play side pivot in the flat, and finishes with the backside pivot as a checkdown or man beater against trailing corners.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety cheating toward the middle signals cover 1 or cover 3 which opens the vertical seam route. Watch for slot cornerbacks pressed at the line, aggressive press man alignment tells you the pivot routes will win quickly off the initial break. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the seam he is taking away your first read and you need to work to the flat pivot immediately. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat zone, a smart user will sit on the pivot route concept so have your quarterback ready to reset to the backside hitch. This play struggles against disciplined cover 2 or cover 4 shells with safeties sitting on the seam, if you see two deep safeties pre-snap lean on the underneath pivot routes instead of forcing the vertical throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to medium when you need a quick access throw against man coverage since the pivot routes create instant separation off breaks.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, if it is single high the seam route up the middle has a strong shot against man or cover 3 buzz.

Hot route the backside slot into a shorter drag if you are facing heavy zone drop coverage that clogs the vertical seam window.

Pair this play with Pivot Slants or Slot Options in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick pivot and the deep seam threat, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops.

Use motion pre-snap on the play side slot to identify man coverage rotation, if the defender follows across the formation you know it is man and the pivot route to the flat becomes an easy completion.
