Four Verticals out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel sends all four receivers vertically up the field, with both outside receivers running straight seams up the numbers, the slot receiver on the left running a skinny post seam, and the slot receiver on the right also pushing a vertical seam, while the HB stays in to check block or leaks late up the middle. This is a classic zone beater designed to stretch Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells horizontally and vertically by flooding all four vertical lanes at once, forcing safeties and corners to make tough leverage decisions. The primary read progression starts outside with the streaking wide receivers against Cover 2 corners, then works to the seam routes attacking the void between the hash and the numbers versus single high safety looks.
Read the safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shallow expect Cover 2 and target the seams, if one safety is deep in the middle of the field expect Cover 3 or Cover 1 and work the outside verticals or the deep middle void. Watch the flat defenders and underneath linebackers post snap, if they sink too fast into the seams that opens the outside vertical routes for an easy throw down the sideline. Man coverage with no help over the top is a clean win for the outside verticals, especially against slower linebackers or safeties matched on the seam routes. Zone shells with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field can bait quarterbacks into a costly interception on the seam throws, so recognize that user controlled defender before committing to that route. Disguised blitzes with late safety rotation can leave this play vulnerable since the extra rush time can force a premature or inaccurate vertical throw before routes fully develop.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or one high safety before the snap to determine which vertical lane will be softest. Against Cover 2, target the seam routes running between the cornerback and safety since that is the traditional weak spot of the shell. Against Cover 3, work the outside verticals against the flat defender or attack the deep middle third if the safety bites on a play fake. Hot route the HB into a checkdown or quick flare if you see a blitz look so you have an outlet against pressure. Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or Bubble Screen in the same set to keep aggressive defenses honest, since the vertical stress of Four Verticals opens up those quick throws once defenders start jumping routes.
