Switch Smash out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel is a classic Cover 2 beater built off a smash concept to one side and a switch release to the other. To the left, the outside receiver runs a corner route while the slot receiver executes a quick hitch underneath, creating the hard/soft smash combo that stretches the flat defender and safety vertically. On the right, the two receivers cross their release paths at the line (the switch) before both breaking outside on deep out routes, confusing man defenders and forcing zone defenders to pass off assignments. The primary read starts with the smash side corner route against the deep safety, then works to the switch concept outs if the safety jumps the corner route, with the underneath hitch as the checkdown against soft coverage.
Pre-snap, locate both safeties. If they are showing two high with depth over ten yards, this play has a strong answer with the smash corner route since the corner defender cannot cover both the hitch and the corner route. Watch the flat defender on the smash side immediately after the snap. If he sinks with the corner route instead of stepping up on the hitch, the underneath route is open for an easy completion. On the switch side, key the cornerbacks at the line. If they trail their original receiver through the switch release without passing off, the natural rub creates separation for whichever receiver ends up matched against the slower defender. This play is vulnerable to a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field since both concepts break outside, leaving no answer against a defender sitting in the shallow middle window. A hard Cover 3 rotation or press man with a deep half safety cheating toward the smash side can take away the primary corner route read and force a check down to the switch side outs late.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is playing two deep safeties before the snap since this play is designed specifically to attack Cover 2 shells. If you see man coverage instead, prioritize the switch concept side since the natural rub at the release point creates immediate separation against man defenders. Use motion or a hot route to convert the underneath hitch into a speed out if you see aggressive underneath zone defenders sitting on the flat. This play works best on second and medium to second and long or third and medium situations where the smash concept's high low read has room to develop. Pair this with Smash Corners or Smash Posts from the same set to keep defenses guessing on which vertical stretch route you are running off similar formation and route stems. Sequence this after Curl Flats or Slants Middle to set up defenders biting on shorter routes before hitting the corner route over the top.
