Inside Cross out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel shows a five wide look with two receivers on the boundary and three to the field side. The backside outside receiver runs a deep dig that breaks left across the field while the near boundary receiver fires off the line into a deep crosser that continues all the way through the formation, creating a natural rub with the shallow drag underneath. Underneath that, one slot receiver runs a shallow drag to the opposite flat and the other slot works a quick out breaking away from the drag, giving you a true man beater with layered crossing routes at three levels while a check release back sits in protection. Primary read starts with the shallow drag working from inside leverage outward, then progresses to the deep crosser sitting down or continuing behind it, and finally to the deep dig if the crosser gets carried too far downfield.
Defensive Reads
Watch for man coverage indicators like press corners or safeties shading over top of the slot receivers, this play is designed to exploit exactly that with natural picks from the crossing routes. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 can be an issue since the deep crosser will run into a robber or hook zone defender sitting in the middle of the field, so check for a middle linebacker or safety sinking into that lane. Read the flow of the linebackers after the snap, if they carry the shallow drag too far outside it opens up the deep crosser for a big gain behind them. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge get exposed if the check release back stays in to block, so watch for user blitzers timing up the A gaps and be ready to throw hot to the drag. Against Cover 2 shells the deep dig becomes the primary target since it sits in the void between the corner and safety, so key the safety depth to see if that window is open.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing man match or off man since the natural pick created by the crosser and shallow drag is deadly against tight man coverage and press corners. Use motion across the formation to spot man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across you know its man and the crossers will get free releases. Hot route the check release back into the flat as a checkdown against pressure looks since the deep routes take time to develop. This play pairs well with Curl Flats or Slants Middle in your call sheet since both look identical pre-snap but attack shallow zones differently, keeping linebackers honest. In third and medium situations let the shallow drag work first since it clears out underneath defenders and sets up the deep crosser behind it against man coverage.
