949 Yara is a play-action flood concept out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel that stresses one side of the field with three vertical stems. The backside receiver runs a deep go, the two receivers on the strong side stack a corner route and a wheel/flood route off a fake HB screen action, and the inside slot fires a quick out to the flat as the shallow underneath option. This is a Cover 3 beater and man beater built to overload zone drops or isolate a corner on the wheel route, with the primary read starting at the flat/screen route and working up to the corner and finally the deep go on the backside.
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this tells you whether the corner route or the backside go is the bigger threat. Watch the flat defender's depth and leverage, if he sinks too deep on the HB route the underneath window opens immediately for an easy completion. Key the play side linebacker's drop, a shallow zone drop from that defender signals Cover 3 and tells the quarterback to work the corner route behind him. On the backside, track the cornerback's press or off alignment, tight man coverage without safety help over the top is a green light for the deep go route. User a lurking safety or spot dropper in the middle of the field to bait the quarterback into throwing the corner route into a trap, since underneath robbers and disciplined zone drops are what shut this concept down.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, a two high shell tells you the corner route has a soft landing spot between the deep half defenders while a single high look means the backside go route can win one on one. Use the HB flat route as your first read against zone coverage since it settles underneath sinking linebackers and buys time for the corner and wheel to develop. Against man coverage, hot route the backside go into a hitch or dig if you see a lurking safety, since the outside corner beater is the higher value route in man matchups. Pair this play with Curl Flats or Slants Middle earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick underneath game, then hit them with 949 Yara to attack the same look with verticals off play action. Best called on second or third and medium when defenses are more willing to sit in zone drops, since the play needs a full progression read to fully develop.
