Breakdown

Slants Middle out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel sends four receivers on crossing slant routes that converge in the middle of the field, with the two outside receivers on the left running deep slants across the field while the two inner receivers cross underneath, and the far right receiver running a slant into the traffic as well. The diagram shows all four wideouts crossing paths near the second level with no visible run blocking, confirming this is a quick-hitting dropback pass designed to beat man coverage by creating natural rub picks as receivers cross. The primary read progression starts with the underneath crossing slants for a quick throw against man defenders, then works to the deeper crossing slants if the initial picks spring someone open downfield.

Defensive Reads

Watch for tight man coverage on the outside receivers pre-snap, since the crossing slant design is built specifically to rub off man defenders and create instant separation. Identify a single high safety shell before the snap, as this often signals man under coverage that Slants Middle is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key on underneath linebackers sitting in the crossing lanes, a robber or lurk defender can jump the shallow slant routes and blow up the quick read. Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells with linebackers dropping into short middle zones can clog the crossing routes and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer than the timing allows. Be aware of disguised blitzes off the edge since there is no visible run blocking or extra protection shown, a well timed nano blitz can collapse the pocket before the slants develop.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like corners lined up tight on the line and a single high safety, since the crossing slants create natural rub picks that man defenders struggle to fight through.

Get the ball out quickly on the shallow crossing routes before the pocket collapses, this is a timing based concept and holding the ball too long negates the pick action.

Use this on second and short or third and short where a quick five to seven yard gain moves the chains, since the underneath slants settle in soft spots for easy completions.

Motion a receiver pre-snap to help identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if defenders follow the motion man is likely on and the slants will hit hard.

Pair this play with Slant Flats or Curl Flats in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the crossing slant picks and the flood concepts to the flats, keeping linebackers and corners guessing.
