Wide Zone Wk is an outside zone run play out of Singleback Spread 10 personnel, with four wide receivers spread across the formation to pull defenders out of the box. The offensive line executes a wide zone blocking scheme, flowing laterally to the play side to seal running lanes before the HB presses the edge and reads his blockers. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and stretch defenders horizontally, with the primary read being the HB's aiming point off the playside tackle and tight zone landmarks, cutting back if the defense overplays the stretch.
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, since fast-flowing linebackers who overrun the play side open up a cutback lane for the HB. Identify if the defense is running a 3-4 or 4-3 front, as heavier fronts with extra defenders in the box can clog the zone lanes and force a quick cutback read. Look for edge defenders crashing hard down the line, which signals a scrape exchange or contain rush that can be exploited by bouncing the run outside. Key on safety rotation post-snap, since a safety filling downhill from depth is a sign of a run blitz or robber technique designed to stop wide zone. User-controlled defenders flying to the play side aggressively are vulnerable to the natural cutback lane, so patience through the mesh point is critical against aggressive user play.
Check the defensive box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a clean numbers advantage.
Use pre-snap motion or shifts to identify if the defense is in man or zone, since wide zone hits hardest against light zone boxes that flow slowly.
Hot route a receiver into a quick screen or bubble look if you see a blitz coming to hold defenders honest, though this diagram shows a pure run design.
Pair this play with HB Draw and Mtn HB Draw in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between zone stretch and draw action.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA HB Out later in the series.
