Breakdown

PA Read runs out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel with a play-action fake to sell the run first before dropping into a five man route concept. On the backside, the two outside receivers stack a deep corner route with an underneath dig sitting at intermediate depth, giving you a natural high low read against man coverage. The right side shows a slot receiver running a shallow drag across the field while the outside receiver climbs into a deep corner break, creating a natural clear out for the crosser. This is a play-action pass designed to attack man coverage with the deep dig and corner combo while the shallow drag serves as your zone beater and check down versus soft zone or blitz looks. Primary read progression starts with the backside dig, then works to the corner route if the safety bites on the play fake, and finishes with the underneath drag as the answer against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard on the play fake the underneath drag and dig will have room to work Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, this tells you the corner route has a one on one shot against most man coverages Against Cover 3 or other zone drops, key the flat defender and curl to seam defender since they determine whether the drag or dig sits in a soft window Man coverage with underneath lurk defenders can jump the dig route early, so be ready to progress to the corner if you see a defender sitting in that throwing lane Blitz heavy looks with no play fake respect from the front seven can collapse the pocket fast, so have a quick answer to the drag or a hot route bail out ready before the snap

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, since the play fake sells harder when defenses respect the run

Check safety depth before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the box the play fake should hold him just long enough to hit the dig or corner behind him

Against two high shells, the dig becomes your primary answer since the corner route will be capped, so speed up your progression to that route

Hot route the shallow drag into a spot or option route versus zone heavy defenses to give yourself a easier completion underneath if the deep stuff is covered

Pair PA Read with HB Draw or Read Option earlier in a drive to get defenders keying run, then come back to PA Read to punish overaggressive linebackers and safeties
