Breakdown

Hitch Seam out of Shotgun Spread with 10 personnel gives you a five man route concept built around two quick hitches from WR1 and WR2, dual streaks from WR3 and WR4 up the seams, and HB1 releasing into a hook route after checking protection. All five offensive linemen stay in to pass block, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his reads. This play is a zone beater at its core, using the hitches to sit in soft spots underneath while the streaks stretch the seams vertically, forcing linebackers and safeties to choose between the short and deep windows.

Defensive Reads

Identify cover 3 or cover 4 shells pre-snap since the seam streaks from WR3 and WR4 are designed to split the deep zone defenders in those coverages. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they drop deep to take away the seams the hitches from WR1 and WR2 will sit wide open underneath. Key on user controlled defenders sitting in the flat or hook zone, a smart user lurking near the hitch routes can jump the throw and create a turnover. Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping the hitches can shut this play down early in the progression, forcing the quarterback to work the streaks against safety help over the top. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge test the five man protection, so watch for late arriving pressure that collapses the pocket before HB1 releases into his hook route.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium when defenses are likely to sit in zone coverage and give up the underneath hitches.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties the seams from WR3 and WR4 will have more room to work against off coverage corners.

Hot route HB1 into a quick check down if the protection is being overloaded, since he stays in as a blocker before releasing late.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Read in your play calling sequence to condition the defense to respect the seams, then come back to Hitch Seam to hit the quick game underneath when they bite on the deep threat.

Against man coverage look immediately to the hitches since the separation window closes fast, and be ready to throw with anticipation before the receiver breaks.
