Breakdown

Hitch Seam lines up in Shotgun Spread 10 personnel with four receivers spread wide. The outside receiver to the left runs a quick hitch to give an underneath pop against soft coverage, while the slot receiver on that side and the outside receiver on the right both push vertical seam routes to attack the deep middle and hash. The X receiver to the far right runs a go route to stretch the cornerback and hold the safety over the top. This is a zone beater designed to attack the void between the flat defender and deep half player, with the primary read progressing from the seam route breaking into the open window, down to the hitch as the quick outlet, and finally to the deep go if the corner sits too soft.

Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense is playing two deep safeties or one, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells leave the seam routes open in the intermediate zone before the safeties can close. Watch the flat defender and slot corner for zone drop timing, if they sink too deep on the hitch route it becomes an easy completion underneath. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender, a deep drop from him clears the seam lane, while a shallow drop forces the quarterback to fit the ball into a tighter window. Man coverage with press corners is the biggest threat to this concept, since the hitch route can get jammed at the line and the seam routes lose separation against tight trail technique. Look for disguised blitzes off the edge, since the quick game hitch route is the built in answer to beat pressure before the seam routes have time to develop downfield.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, two high safeties usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which opens up the seam routes running vertically through the intermediate zones.

If the defense shows single high, expect man coverage or Cover 3, so hot route the hitch into a slant or bring the seam receiver back on a comeback to counter aggressive underneath defenders.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the hitch route gives a reliable quick game answer if the seams get taken away by deep zone drops.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Smash Corners in your call sheet to keep defenders honest on seam coverage after they start jumping the hitch route.

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow the inside seam route will have a clean throwing lane behind him before the safety can rotate over.
