Breakdown

Inside Cross is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel with no backfield help, meaning the quarterback is on his own to identify pressure and coverage. The backside slot runs a deep dig across the field while the two receivers stacked at the line run shallow crossers underneath, one from each side, creating natural traffic for man defenders to fight through. On the outside, the boundary receiver runs a vertical route that breaks outside at the top, and the field side X runs a corner breaking route off the numbers, giving you a two level clearout to hold safeties. This is a man beater built on natural rub picks from the crossing routes, with the primary progression starting on the shallow crossers underneath before working up to the deep dig and finally the corner breaking route if the defense sits low.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is exactly what this play is designed to attack, so if you see man alignment on the crossers, expect the quarterback to trust the rub and throw underneath quickly. Zone defenses that keep linebackers shallow and sit on the crossing routes take away the easy underneath completion, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and look for the dig or corner route. As the defense, use a spy or a rat linebacker sitting in the middle of the field to jump the shallow crossers, since that is the first read the quarterback is likely to make. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the passing lane of the dig route, since that route has to cross the entire field and is vulnerable to a jumped throw if the user reads it late. Cover three or cover four shells with deep safeties can bracket the corner breaking route on the outside, so if the safety stays deep and outside leverage is maintained, that route is taken away and the quarterback is forced back inside.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to second and long when you expect man coverage since the crossing routes create natural picks that separate from man defenders.

Read the middle of the field pre snap. If you see two high safeties, target the shallow crossers immediately since the middle should be soft against zone drops.

Against man coverage, let the crossers work all the way across the field before throwing since the rub action needs time to develop separation.

Hot route the backside shallow crosser into a spot or hook if you are getting blitzed off the edge, since it gives you a quick outlet away from the pressure.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Mesh from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between shallow crossing action and deeper dig concepts, forcing linebackers to respect multiple crossing patterns.
