Breakdown

PA GT Z Tunnel is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that uses a run fake to hold the second level before releasing three routes. The outside receiver runs a vertical stem up the sideline, the slot receiver works a deep out that breaks toward the numbers, and the Z receiver runs the tunnel screen underneath with a puller escorting him upfield after the catch. Primary read progression starts with the tunnel screen to the Z as the built-in checkdown against soft coverage, then climbs to the deep out from the slot and finally the vertical shot outside if the play fake sucks up the linebackers and safeties.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers who step up on the fake open passing lanes for the deep out and vertical route. Identify the coverage shell pre-snap; two high safeties usually signal a defense willing to sit on the tunnel screen so be ready to climb to your second read. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing to the flat or sitting under the tunnel screen, which kills that option and forces the progression to the deep out. Zone coverage with linebackers dropping into passing lanes will squeeze the tunnel screen so key on whether the nearest defender to the puller crashes or stays home. Man coverage on the outside receiver with no safety help over the top signals the vertical shot is live, especially versus blitz packages that pull a safety into the box.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage to sell the run fake and get free access to the tunnel screen against aggressive fronts.

Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense is stacked in the run fit, the Z tunnel becomes an automatic answer against overcommitted linebackers.

Use the deep out from the slot as your man beater against man coverage since the receiver gets natural separation working across the field.

Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone from the same personnel to keep linebackers honest and set up the play fake for bigger explosion plays later in the game.

If the safeties bite on the run action, hot route the outside receiver into a deep post to attack the vacated middle of the field against single high looks.
