Mtn X Spot

Breakdown

Mtn X Spot is a Spot concept variant out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel designed to attack zone coverage with a five man route distribution that stresses the flat, hook, and corner zones simultaneously. The X receiver runs the spot route (a hard hitch into the flat area underneath), while the flanker or slot works a corner route to hold the deep defender, with a curl or dig running behind it to fill the hook zone vacated by underneath defenders. This is a zone beater at its core, though the spot and flat combo also give you a quick answer against man coverage if you diagnose the blitz early. Primary read progression starts with the corner route to see if the flat defender widens, then works down to the spot route sitting underneath, and finishes with the curl or dig filling behind the linebackers if the zone opens up in the middle.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, since a two high shell tells you the corner route will not have deep help over the top and the flat defender becomes the key conflict player. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he widens with the spot route immediately the corner route behind him is your window, if he sits the spot route underneath is the easy completion. Identify linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers signal Cover 3 or Cover 1 where the curl or dig sitting behind them can be user picked off by a rallying lurk defender. This play struggles against aggressive man coverage with a single high safety, since the spot route hitch has no natural separation against a press corner playing tight technique. Look for nano blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge, since the shorter drop routes in this concept get there fast but the protection can break down before the corner route fully develops.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a strafe to bait the defense into revealing man versus zone before the snap, since the spot route hitch is far more effective against zone defenders who need to sit and read.

If you see two high safeties with corners playing off, expect zone and prioritize the spot and flat combo underneath rather than forcing the corner route into a deep half defender.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you diagnose a blitz look, since the spot concept can get exposed if extra rushers overload the protection before your reads develop.

This play pairs well with Mtn Z Spot N Go in your play-calling sequence, since the double move off the same route distribution punishes defenders who jump the spot route after seeing it on tape.

Best used on second or third and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone and respect the run, since the underneath completions are designed to pick up manageable chunks.
