Mesh Post out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel gives you a true mesh concept underneath paired with a deep post shot. The two inside receivers cross low at the line to rub off man defenders while the boundary receiver runs a deep post from the backside, and the frontside receiver stems outside then hooks up on a comeback breaking route. The tight end or slot works a shallow drag into the mesh point, and the fullback or backfield player releases to the flat for a checkdown against blitz. This is a man beater at its core thanks to the natural rub created by the mesh crossers, though the post also gives you a big play answer versus single high zone coverage. Primary read starts with the post shot up top, then works down to the mesh crossers working opposite directions underneath, and finishes with the flat route as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre snap, these are the shells most vulnerable to the post shot since there is no second deep defender to help over the top. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if inside linebackers sit shallow and crash the mesh crossers immediately, that signals man coverage and the post should be your first look. Key the flat defender on the checkdown side, a linebacker sinking hard into a flat zone tells you Cover 2 or Cover 4 with underneath zone drops, which favors sitting the flat route in the soft spot rather than forcing the mesh. Beware user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the mesh window, aggressive players will jump the crossing routes looking for a jump ball or pick six, so double check the middle of the field before throwing into traffic. Cover 2 with two deep safeties and disciplined zone drops shuts this down hardest since it takes away the post shot and clogs the mesh lanes, in that case dump to the flat and live to play another down.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety shaded to the post side, look off that safety with your eyes to open the post window before committing to the crossers.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the mesh underneath gives you a reliable completion while the post stays alive as a home run shot.

Hot route the flat runner into a corner route or seam if you diagnose zone coverage pre snap, this turns a checkdown play into another vertical shot against soft zone drops.

Pair Mesh Post with quick game concepts like Quick Slants or Y Stick earlier in a series so linebackers start jumping underneath, this sets up the deep post to hit once they overplay short routes.

Against man coverage, trust the natural rub at the mesh point and take the first crosser open in your primary read rather than holding for the post, defenders in trail technique will get picked off by the traffic.
