RPO Read Slot Slide lines up out of Shotgun Spread with 10 personnel, showing an inside zone run look with the offensive line sliding protection to the play side while the slot receiver runs a quick option route (in or out based on leverage) off the numbers. The backside receiver stays home as a hot read alert while the outside receiver at the top of the screen releases vertically to occupy the deep defender. This is a true run-pass option: the primary read progression is quarterback eyes the alley defender or slot corner first, if he sits or crashes down on the run the quarterback pulls and throws the slide route to the slot man, if he widens with the slot the quarterback hands off into the zone run lane.
Watch the alley defender or slot corner at the snap, if he crashes down to fill the run lane the slide route behind him is wide open Check linebacker depth before the snap, stacked or shallow linebackers signal a run blitz that the quarterback should throw off of immediately Man coverage on the slot receiver with no underneath help is a green light to throw the slide route since the route design creates natural separation off the release Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a defender sitting in the short zone can shut down the slide throw, so the quarterback should default to the run read in that shell User controlled defenders sprinting down to spy the run early are the biggest tell that the offense should pull the ball and throw the RPO window immediately
Presnap identify the alley defender or slot corner leverage before the snap, this is your entire key for the read
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage since it keeps the offense balanced between run and pass
If the defense shows a hard box with eight or more in the box, key the slot slide throw immediately instead of hesitating on the run
Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Alert Bubble in the same drive so the defense cannot sit on one specific RPO key
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant against man coverage to add a second answer if the defender playing the slot slide jumps the route
