RPO Read Slot Slide lines up in Shotgun Spread with 10 personnel, showing an inside zone run action to the HB while the offensive line executes a slide protection scheme across the front. The slot receiver runs a quick angle/option route working underneath as the primary run-pass conflict read, with the outside receiver on that side running a vertical stem to hold the corner and safety. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and off man coverage: the QB reads the second level defender (usually the flowing linebacker or nickel) to decide between handing off the zone run or pulling and hitting the slot slide route for a quick, easy completion.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and note linebacker depth, if a linebacker is sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage he is likely the RPO key defender. Watch for the nickel or slot corner cheating inside pre-snap, this signals he may be responsible for both the run fit and the slide route, creating a conflict you can exploit. Post-snap, user the flowing linebacker or nickel defender manually and freeze him in the run/pass conflict zone instead of letting the AI commit, this shuts down the entire concept. Zone coverages with a linebacker spying the slide route or a Tampa 2 look with deep middle help tend to shut this play down since the underneath window gets clogged. Man coverage with off corners struggling to disguise leverage is where this play hits hardest, if you see man alignment with no underneath help, expect the slide route to be live.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense shows six or more in the box, lean toward pulling the slide route instead of handing it off.

Use this against defenses that key run flow with linebackers, if you see a linebacker crash hard downhill at the snap, the slide route behind him is money.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you are getting single high safety looks, giving you a second answer against man coverage.

Pair this play with straight Inside Zone or HB Draw earlier in a series so the defense has to respect the run fake, making the RPO read even more effective later.

Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more willing to load the box, since the read punishes aggressive run fits.
