RNS Hook is a quick pass concept out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that attacks the middle of the field with a hook (curl) route combo. Off the diagram, the backside receiver runs a slant while the inside receiver on that side works vertically before breaking outside on a go route, giving a slant/go combo to that side. On the play side, the slot receiver runs a hook (curl) route sitting down in the intermediate zone while the outside receiver runs a curl flat route or go depending on the diagram nuance, creating a curl flat combo underneath the go. This is a man beater and Cover 3 beater built around picks and natural separation from the hook sitting down against zone or working away from man leverage, with the quick game timing designed to get the ball out before pressure arrives. The primary read progression starts with the hook route sitting down in the middle, then works to the curl flat combo, with the slant as a quick outlet against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety alignment, if you see two high safeties it signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which softens the hook read and favors the slant and go combo instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sits shallow and jumps the hook route, look to the flat or the go route immediately. This play beats Cover 3 zone drops because the hook route settles into the soft spot vacated by the flat defender, so identify if the flat defender rolls out or stays home. Against man coverage, this play is vulnerable to a user controlled defender jumping the hook route from depth, so check for a lurking safety or linebacker sitting in the throwing window before committing to that read. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt timing on the hook route, so recognize A gap or edge pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on the quicker slant or flat option.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you need a high percentage completion with a built in hot read.

Identify pre-snap whether the defense is showing Cover 3 or man coverage by reading corner depth, if corners are playing soft and off, the hook route sitting down in the zone will be wide open.

If the defense shows man coverage with a single high safety, work the slant quickly since the hook route will have a defender sitting on top of it.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or RNS Curl Flat in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between similar route concepts with different combinations underneath.

Use hot routes to convert the flat route to a quicker option if you see a blitz look, since this gets the ball out fast and protects against pressure.
