Mtn RPO Q Draw Base

Breakdown

Mtn RPO Q Draw Base is a run-pass option out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that pairs an inside HB draw with mountain (Mtn) slot concepts designed to attack second-level defenders keying the run. The quarterback reads the play-side linebacker or nickel defender: if that defender crashes downhill on the draw action, the QB pulls and throws to the RPO peek route, and if the defender sits or bails into coverage, the running back gets the give on the draw with a natural cutback lane behind the interior blocking. This is a hybrid gap-scheme run beater and light-box zone beater, since it punishes linebackers who bite on the mesh point instead of respecting the perimeter throw.

Defensive Reads

Track the play-side linebacker or slot defender at the snap, since his first step toward the line of scrimmage is your triggerman for pulling and throwing the peek route. Watch for a nickel blitz off the edge, because if that defender attacks A-gap or B-gap immediately, the draw lane can collapse and you need to get the ball out on the RPO read instead of forcing the handoff. Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap, since single high man coverage with the linebacker staying home shuts down both the draw cutback and the peek throw simultaneously. Look for a lurking user defender sitting in the shallow flat or peek window, as a smart human defender jumping the RPO tag mid-mesh point is the biggest threat to this play and should push you toward committing to the run. Against heavy zone drops with linebackers reading run first, take the free draw yardage rather than forcing a contested throw into a clogged short zone.

Usage Tips

Presnap, count the box defenders and check for a nickel or safety cheating down, since a light box (six or fewer) is your green light to stick with the draw read the entire play.

Use the RPO peek window on early downs, second and short or first and ten, when defenses are more willing to sell out on run fits and leave the peek receiver uncovered.

If the defense shows a two high shell with soft linebacker depth, hot route the peek receiver into a quick slant or speed out to punish off coverage before the run fit can adjust.

Sequence this call after HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in the drive so linebackers start keying run fast, then hit them with the RPO peek throw off the same run action to make them pay for over pursuing.

Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Alert WR Screens in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on one specific RPO tag and has to respect multiple perimeter and inline threats from the same formation.
