Breakdown

HB Counter out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel is a pure run play designed to attack the backside of the offensive line with counter action. The diagram shows four receivers stretching the defense wide with no routes drawn, meaning they are just clearing space and holding defenders in coverage rather than blocking or running combos. The line pulls to create a misdirection lane, and the primary read is to press the initial hole, let the pullers set the edge, then cut off the counter action once the linebackers commit to the false flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and shade pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line with no cushion the counter's misdirection has less room to work. Key the strongside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing hard upfield, since disciplined edge players who sit and read can blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or nano blitz package pre-snap, since fast interior penetration beats the counter's timing before blocks set. Post-snap, track second level linebackers for over pursuit to the initial flow direction, if they bite hard on the counter step the cutback lane opens. Zone shells with disciplined safeties who stay square and do not flow hard to run action are the toughest defense against this play, while man coverage that clears out defenders from the box is where HB Counter hits best.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the counter needs numbers advantage to hit clean.

Use the spread receivers to bait man coverage defenders and safeties out of the tackle box before the snap, which opens the counter lane against man beater friendly leverage.

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up later play-action rollouts from the same Spread Shotgun personnel.

Pair HB Counter with Inside Zone and HB Draw in the same drive to keep linebacker flow guessing between gap and zone run fits.

If the defense shows an overload blitz or aggressive edge pressure pre-snap, check to a hot route or bail into a quick game play like Quick Slants instead since counter needs time for the pullers to develop.
