Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since single high leaves the deep vertical routes on islands against man corners. User a linebacker or safety to sit in the crosser's lane and jump the route, this is the primary way to shut this play down since it eliminates the first read. Zone defenses with a deep half safety rotating over the top can take away both vertical shots, forcing the quarterback to check down into a crowded underneath area. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play if the offensive line is outnumbered, since the play action hold delays the quarterback's release.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by not immediately breaking into hot routes, hold the play-action animation to freeze linebackers before working your progression.

Use this against teams that are heavy in zone coverage since the crosser exploits the natural voids created by underneath zone drops flowing away from the play fake.

On third and medium, target the crosser as your rhythm throw since it settles in the soft spot between the flat defender and the middle linebacker.

Pair this with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run action and bites harder on the fake when you come back to PA Slot Cross.

Against man coverage, read the backside vertical route first since a natural pick or rub from the crosser's stem can create separation deep.
