Breakdown

PA Slot Cross runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Spread with 10 personnel to sell run and hold the linebackers. Off the fake, the crosser (red route) works from the slot across the field underneath, while two vertical routes from the boundary receivers stretch the deep field on the outside. The primary read progression starts with the deep outside route to see if the play-action fake bites a safety, then works down to the crosser sitting in the intermediate window, and finally checks the far vertical release as a last resort against busted zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he bites hard on the run fake the crosser will have a wide throwing lane underneath Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow to intermediate middle zone since that is the exact spot the crosser wants to settle into Man coverage on the slot receiver is vulnerable because the crosser creates natural separation working across the field, look for the defender to get picked or trail from behind Cover 3 zone drops can wall off the crosser if the flow linebacker sinks quickly into the throwing window, so recognize that shell pre-snap by checking corner depth and single high safety alignment Blitzes off the edge with no delayed contain can beat the play-action fake before the crosser develops, so identify overload pressure looks and be ready to get the ball out early

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are keying run because the play-action fake needs linebackers to step up to be effective

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this crosser will have more room to work underneath since the linebackers are your primary conflict defenders

Hot route the far side vertical into a deep out or comeback if you are facing a hard cover 3 shell to prevent that receiver from running into a deep third defender

Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the play-action fake carries more weight against aggressive linebackers

Sequence this with Y Cross or Mesh later in the same series so defenses cannot sit on the same crossing concept read after read
