Breakdown

Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel sends both outside receivers vertical on the far side (one straight seam, one comeback break to the sideline) while the two inside receivers work the middle with a deep dig and a shallow crosser that clears under it. The HB releases from the backfield on a quick angle route to the flat, giving the quarterback a built in checkdown against pressure. This is a zone beater at its core, using the shallow drag to sit underneath linebackers and the dig behind it to occupy the same window from a deeper level, forcing zone defenders to pick between levels. Primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser, works up to the dig if the crosser is taken away, then bails to the HB angle route if both are covered late.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and spacing, if they are stacked shallow they are likely keying the crosser and dig combo on this play. Watch safety alignment, two high shells with soft corners on the outside verticals tell you the shallow cross and dig window will be open underneath. Post-snap, if a linebacker sinks hard to lurk the shallow route with user control, that opens the dig route or the HB angle route as the answer. Cover 3 with an aggressive underneath robber can jump the crosser early, so be ready to climb the progression to the dig or bail to the checkdown. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the backside vertical route gets exposed, since the crosser and dig combo pull defenders away and create one on one leverage deep.

Usage Tips

Use this against off man or zone shells with two high safeties, the shallow crosser has room to work if corners are playing soft on the outside verticals.

Hot route the backside vertical receiver into a slant or drag if you see Cover 3 sink, this gives you a second shallow option to attack underneath zone drops.

Best called on second and medium or third and short to medium since the shallow crosser and HB angle route give reliable underneath completions against a variety of blitzes.

Pair this with H Shallow Cross or X Shallow Cross earlier in a drive to condition linebackers to sink under crossers, then hit the deep comeback or seam route on the backside once they start jumping the shallow route.

If the user controls a linebacker to lurk the shallow crosser, immediately progress to the dig route since it occupies a deeper zone that the same defender cannot cover.
