PA Slot Slide is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Spread with 10 personnel. Off the run fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner/go route up the sideline while the slot receiver executes a slide route that breaks flat across the field underneath, and the backside receiver runs a deep dig that sits behind the underneath traffic. The play-action hold freezes linebackers, opening the slide route as the primary read against zone underneath while the deep corner and dig stretch the field vertically against man coverage. Primary progression starts with the slide route in the flat, works to the deep dig, and comes back to the corner route on the boundary if the shot play develops.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the run fake, which signals they are biting and will vacate the underneath zone for the slide route. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the deep dig route sitting in the middle of the field can find soft spots against these coverages. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the slot, since that can jump the slide route and turn it into a turnover if the quarterback forces the throw. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, expect the corner route to be squeezed by a deep half safety, so be ready to move off that read quickly and check down to the slide or dig. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap with man coverage on the outside, the play-action hold can be exploited immediately since blitzers overrun the fake and the slide route becomes an easy completion in the vacated area.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake and get linebackers to bite, which opens the slide route for an easy pitch and catch.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two high safeties favor the corner route on the outside since the deep half should be softer, while one high safety means the dig route in the middle of the field has more space.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or hitch if you see man coverage with no safety help underneath, since that gives you a faster underneath option than the developing dig.

Pair this play with 45 Quick Base or Quick Slants earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick underneath game, making the play-action shot off this concept more effective when you finally call it.

Best used against aggressive linebacker blitzes or teams that key run heavily, since the play fake will hold second level defenders just long enough to hit the slide or dig behind them.
