Breakdown

RNS Switch Smash lines up out of Shotgun Spread with a two-receiver switch release to the left and a smash concept to the right. The left side crosses a corner route and a flag/out route at the snap to confuse man defenders, while the right side pairs a hitch underneath with a corner route from the outside receiver, both breaking outside vertically. This is a classic smash concept built to attack Cover 2, with the switch release on the backside acting as a natural man beater against tight coverage. Primary read starts with the right side smash combo (hitch to corner) high-low on the flat defender, then works to the switch release on the left if the safety jumps the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corner alignment on the smash side presnap, tight outside leverage signals the corner route will be squeezed and the hitch will be the quicker throw. Key the flat defender or cornerback drop on the smash concept, if he sinks under the corner route the QB should hit the hitch immediately for a safe gain. On the switch release side, watch for a user defender sitting at the crossing point looking to jump the rub, this lurk threat can undercut both routes if he reads the switch quickly. Zone defenses with two deep safeties are vulnerable to the smash concept since the flat defender cannot be in two places, but a robber or Tampa 2 look with a deep middle safety can erase the crossing routes on the switch side. Post snap, if the defense shows a hard blitz look, expect the hitch route to convert into a quick outlet since the QB will need a fast release option against pressure.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify if the corner is playing outside leverage on the right side since that tells you whether the hitch or the corner route will be open first.

Against Cover 2, throw the corner route on the smash side as soon as the flat defender commits to the hitch, the safety cannot cover both.

Against man coverage, lean on the switch release side since the natural rub at the crossing point creates instant separation for whichever receiver wins the pick.

Use this play on second or third and short to medium since the hitch route gives you a safe checkdown if both verticals are covered.

Pair this with RNS Switch Streak in your play-calling sequence, since the switch streak looks identical presnap but sends both switch receivers vertical, forcing defenders to respect the deep ball after they bite on the smash unders.
