Snag X Corner is a Snag concept variant run out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that pairs the classic snag triangle (corner, flat, and spot) to one side with the X receiver running a corner route to attack the boundary or field vertically. It is a zone beater at its core, designed to stress Cover 3 and Cover 2 by putting three defenders in conflict on the snag side while the X corner route stretches the deep third or occupies the flat defender. The primary read progression starts with the X corner route against Cover 3 rotation, then works down to the flat defender for the leverage throw, and finally settles on the spot route underneath as the checkdown against hard zone drops.
Read the deep third or deep half defender first, since Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells create the natural conflict this concept is built to exploit. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting on the corner route, which signals you should work back down to the flat and spot combination underneath. Identify linebacker depth pre-snap, because shallow linebackers can jump the spot route and take away the checkdown against zone blitz looks. Man coverage with press corners on the X receiver can shut this down quickly if there is no safety help over the top, so recognize man alignment and be ready to bail into a hot route. Cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined corners rolling to the deep quarter will squeeze the corner route window, forcing the progression down to the flat defender for the easier completion.
Check the safety alignment before the snap to confirm single high versus two high, since this concept punishes Cover 3 rotation when the corner route holds the deep defender. If you see man coverage across the board, hot route the flat route into a quicker option or shift focus to the spot route sitting down for a rhythm throw. Use this play on second and medium or third and short to long situations where defenses lean on zone shells to prevent the deep ball. Pair this call with Curl Flats or Y Stick in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the snag triangle after seeing it once. Against Cover 2, work the corner route hard since it splits the deep half defender from the flat defender in the pattern read progression.
