FL Cross is a five wide route concept out of Shotgun Spread with 10 personnel, using no backfield help so every blocking assignment falls on the offensive line in pass protection. The flanker runs the deep crosser from the left side all the way across the field, while the two receivers to the right run a dig and a corner combo, and the two receivers to the left run a flat route and a deep in. This is a zone beater built to attack the middle of the field, and the primary read progression starts with the FL crosser working across the formation, then progresses to the dig sitting underneath any zone rotation, with the flat route as the checkdown against underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Check the depth of the linebackers before the snap, since shallow linebackers signal zone coverage that FL Cross is designed to exploit with the deep crosser. Watch the safeties at the snap, if both safeties bail deep into a Cover 2 shell the crosser will have to fight through traffic in the middle of the field. Key the flat defender on the play side, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes he can jump the underneath flat route and force a longer developing throw. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow middle zone, since that is exactly where the FL crosser and dig route intersect and a smart user rat can bait an interception. Man coverage with no deep help, especially Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitz packages, shuts this play down quickly since the crosser has no room to separate and protection can break down against extra rushers.

Usage Tips

Use FL Cross on second and long or third and medium when you need a horizontal stretch that clears out linebackers to open the deep crosser.

Identify pre-snap whether the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4, since the FL crosser sits down nicely in the honey hole against those shells.

Hot route the flat route into a quick out if you see man coverage with no safety help underneath, giving your quarterback an immediate answer against blitz looks.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Mesh in your call sheet to keep the defense guessing between high crossers and low mesh concepts, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Against Cover 2, look to hit the dig route on the right side before the corner route clears out the deep half, since the crosser can get squeezed by two deep safeties.
