Breakdown

PA Z-under is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that uses a hard fake to hold linebackers before working an under route from the Z receiver across the middle of the field. The blocking scheme keeps the offensive line home in max protect to sell the run fake, buying time for the underneath route to develop while other receivers stretch the field vertically and to the flats. This is primarily a zone beater, since the Z-under route settles into soft spots between linebacker levels, but it also works against man coverage if you can get a natural pick or rub at the snap. The primary read progression starts with the Z-under sitting in the shallow to intermediate zone, then works to the vertical or flat routes if the under is squeezed by underneath zone defenders.

Defensive Reads

Look for linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage they are likely to bite on the play-action fake and open up the Z-under route. Identify single high safety looks such as Cover 3 or Cover 1, these shells often leave the intermediate middle exposed since the underneath defenders have to respect both the run and the crossing route. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot in the middle of the field, since a smart user can jump the Z-under route and blow up the primary read, forcing you to progress to your second option quickly. Key the defensive line for a stunt or blitz package, since play-action with max protect can be vulnerable to interior pressure if the offensive line gets beat before the fake sells. Recognize Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since these tend to clog the underneath zones with extra linebackers and corners sitting on shorter routes, making the Z-under a tougher read against disciplined zone drops.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs, especially first or second and short to medium, when the defense is likely to bite on the run fake out of Shotgun Spread.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, that usually signals zone coverage and the Z-under will have room to sit down in the void.

Hot route the fullback or the checkdown option to a flat route if you expect a blitz, giving yourself an outlet against pressure that beats the play-action fake.

Pair this play with 45 Quick Base or Quick Slants earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting quick game, making the play-action fake to Z-under hit even harder later.

Use motion or shifts pre-snap to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows your slot receiver across the formation you know it is man and you can lean on the rub concepts instead of sitting in the zone window.
