PA Comebacks runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel to freeze the linebackers before attacking the perimeter with comeback and dig routes. The backside receiver runs a comeback breaking outside near the sideline while the two inside receivers work an in-cut dig and a deep post up the seam, and the frontside receiver runs a comeback breaking away from the numbers. This is a zone beater designed to exploit soft corners and hesitant safeties after the run fake, with the primary read starting on the backside comeback route before working to the deep post and the underneath dig if the corner sits low.
Watch linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the underneath dig and comeback routes will have wide throwing windows. Read the corner technique pre-snap, soft corners sitting off the line get beaten easily by the comeback breaks while press corners can disrupt timing and should be attacked with the deep post instead. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high leaves the deep post vulnerable while two high forces you to rely on the comeback routes on the outside. Look for a user controlled defender flashing into the shallow dig route, that lurk threat can jump the underneath crosser and turn it into a turnover if you force the throw. Beware of a delayed blitz off the edge since this play holds the quarterback in the pocket during the play fake, get through the progression fast if the pass rush shows an overload look.
Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses respect the run fake and linebackers step up on play action.
Check for two high safeties pre-snap since the deep post route needs a soft shell to work versus single high looks the comeback routes become the primary target instead.
Hot route the underneath dig into a shallow drag if you see man coverage across the board to give yourself a quick outlet against blitz looks.
Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the play fake actually influences linebacker depth and opens throwing lanes.
Sequence this behind Four Verticals or Post Flags to keep safeties honest, then come back to PA Comebacks when they start cheating up on shorter routes.
