Mesh out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel features two crossing shallow routes underneath that form the classic mesh pick concept, with the near slot receiver crossing left to right around 3-5 yards and the far outside receiver crossing right to left at the same depth to create natural traffic against man defenders. The outside receiver to the boundary runs a deep corner route as the vertical shot, one receiver clears out on a deep over route to the far sideline, and the running back releases into the flat as a checkdown and coverage-tell route. Read progression starts with the corner route for an explosive shot if the cornerback bites on the mesh traffic, then works down to the crossing routes at the mesh point, and finally checks down to the running back in the flat if everything underneath is covered.
Man coverage is the primary vulnerability here since the crossing mesh routes create natural rubs that force defenders to fight through traffic, so if you see press or off man across the board expect the crossers to pop open. User the underneath defender closest to the mesh point and manually run with the shallow crosser instead of trusting AI defenders, since the CPU will get picked and lose contain. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, as that user-controlled defender can jump the shallow crossers and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares down the mesh point too long. Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells with disciplined underneath defenders can clog the mesh point and force the checkdown, so if the linebackers sit at 5 yards and squeeze the crossers, expect the quarterback to look to the flat or the deep over route instead. A blitz off the edge with man coverage behind it is dangerous against this play since the mesh point routes take a beat to develop, so identify overload blitz looks presnap and consider hot routing the running back to stay in and block.
Use this on second or third and medium since the mesh crossers naturally pick up 4 to 6 yards separation against man coverage and give you a manageable conversion. Presnap, check for man coverage by looking at corner leverage and safety rotation, since mesh loses value against a true zone shell with underneath defenders sitting in passing lanes. If you see off man or press man with no safety help over the top, hot route the corner route receiver to a fade or take the shot immediately off play action instead of working the mesh. Against zone, hot route one of the crossers into a sit route or drag through the middle void to punish Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops. Pair this play with Y Stick or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to condition the defense to sit on shallow crossers, then dial up Mesh Post or Four Verticals from the same formation to attack overcommitted underneath defenders with shot plays.
