WK Flood is a three level flood concept out of Shotgun 10 personnel designed to stretch one side of the field vertically and attack Cover 3 zone defenders. The play sends a deep route, an intermediate out or corner breaking route, and a shallow flat route all to the same side, forcing a single flat defender or cornerback to choose between two or three stacked threats. This is a zone beater at its core, though it holds up against man coverage too if the deep route can win one on one, and the primary read progression works high to low: check the deep shot first, then work down to the intermediate breaking route, and finally check down to the flat if the underneath defender sinks or the corner and safety both cover the top of the flood.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, key the cornerback depth on the flood side, since a corner playing off at seven or more yards signals zone and tells you the deep route has room to work outside. Watch the flat defender, usually a linebacker or slot corner, because if he widens too early to jump the shallow route he opens a throwing lane to the intermediate breaking route behind him. Post-snap, be alert for a user controlled safety rotating over to rob the deep route on the flood side, which is the most common way good competitive opponents shut this concept down. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties splitting the field, expect the corner to play the flood aggressively underneath, which favors the deep shot only if you can layer it over the top before the safety arrives. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the flood side edge can collapse your protection quickly, so if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap, be ready to get the ball out on the flat route as a quick answer instead of holding for the deeper reads.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a two high shell or a single high safety, since a single high look with a hard rolled corner is exactly the shell this flood concept is designed to punish. If you see Cover 3 with the corner sitting at five to seven yards, trust the flood and work top to bottom through your reads without hesitating on the first route. Against man coverage, consider hot routing the shallow flat route into a quick option or slant to give yourself a rhythm throw if your deep and intermediate routes are blanketed. Use WK Flood on second and long or third and medium situations where a defense is more likely to sit in zone shells, since the flood concept thrives when defenders are reading the quarterback instead of playing man technique. Pair this call with Curl Flats or FL Cross earlier in a drive to set up the same flood side look, then hit WK Flood once you see the defense overplaying shorter zone drops.
