Quick Slot Out is a timing based quick pass out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel designed to get the ball out of your hands within a second or two of the snap. The slot receiver breaks quickly to the sideline on an out route while the outside receivers run shorter hitches or slants to clear space and hold the corner, giving you a horizontal stretch on the underneath zones. This is primarily a man beater since the out cut creates instant separation against a trailing defender, though it also punishes soft zone corners who sink too far off the line. The primary read progression starts with the slot out, then works to the boundary hitch or slant if the flat defender jumps the out route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat or curl to flat defender pre snap, if he is sitting shallow and reads the out route immediately this play gets shut down fast. Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with corners playing off coverage, since squat corners can undercut the out route for a pick six if you throw late. Look for man coverage indicators like a linebacker or nickel corner shaded tight to the slot receiver with no zone rotation behind him, this is the green light to fire the out route immediately. Key on blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge, since the quick out beats blitzes by getting the ball out before the rush arrives. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard sink from the flat defender, expect the out route to be well defended and progress to the backside hot route or checkdown instead.

Usage Tips

Fire this play quickly on third and short or second and medium when you need a safe, high percentage completion against pressure. Check the corner over the slot receiver before the snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top the out route wins almost every time. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see Cover 3 sink underneath, this gives you a second horizontal option away from the flat defender. Use pump fake or ball placement low and away from the boundary to protect the out route against squat corners who sit on the sideline in Cover 2. Pair this play with Slot Fades or Quick Slants in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between quick game concepts, then mix in Y Stick or Curl Flats once the defense starts jumping the out route.
