Breakdown

Quick Slot Out is a rhythm quick-pass concept out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel built to get the ball out of your hand in under two seconds. The slot receiver snaps off an out route to the boundary while the outside receivers run shorter hitches or quick outs of their own, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch read against the flat defender. This is primarily a man beater since the out route creates instant separation on a hard break versus off-man or press corners, but it also holds up against soft zone shells because the quick timing beats zone drops before they sink. The primary read progression starts with the slot out and works to the nearest boundary hitch if the flat defender jumps the route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sits at five yards or deeper the slot out sits in a soft window for an easy completion. Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells presnap, since the corner sitting on the flat with outside leverage can jump the out route and bait a pick six if the quarterback stares it down. Key the slot cornerback's alignment, press coverage on the slot receiver disrupts the timing of the out break and forces a hitch in the route. Look for user-controlled linebackers spying the middle and dropping into the flat late, this is the biggest threat to sitting underneath the throw. Blitz packages that bring the slot defender on a nano blitz can beat this play if the hot route isn't triggered in time, so respect overload pressure from the boundary.

Usage Tips

Presnap, check for off-man or Cover 3 shells since the flat defender's leverage tells you whether the slot out or the boundary hitch will be open first.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you diagnose a hard blitz look, since this gives you a built-in answer versus nano blitzes and overload pressure.

Use this play on third and short or second and medium when you need a safe, high percentage completion that also stops the clock in two minute situations.

Pair Quick Slot Out with Slot Fades or Post Flags later in a drive so the defense respects the vertical shot and starts biting on the quick out, opening up bigger plays off the same formation.

Snap the ball quickly after the presnap read to prevent user-controlled defenders from rotating late into the flat and undercutting the route.
