Breakdown

Slot Outs comes out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel with four receivers split into two groups. To the left, the outside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers while the slot receiver breaks outside on a quick out route, and a tight out from the inner slot man cuts across underneath to the sideline in red, showing a route that stays flat and low for a quick throw. To the right, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical, the inner slot breaks outside on an out route, and the slot receiver runs a quick pivot or return route working back toward the quarterback. This is a man beater built on horizontal separation, with the primary read starting on the right side out and pivot combo before working back to the left side seam and boundary out.

Defensive Reads

Check corner alignment before the snap, since tight press corners signal man coverage that struggles against the quick out and pivot combo on the right. Watch linebacker depth and flow, because shallow zone drops from linebackers can undercut the tight out route in red if they read the quarterback's eyes early. Identify single high safety looks, which open up the seam routes on both sides since there is no second deep defender to help over the top. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the flat or curl zones, since they are the biggest threat to jumping the out routes and turning them into turnovers. Recognize Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with cornerbacks sinking deep, since those coverages force you to rely on the underneath outs rather than pushing the ball outside the numbers.

Usage Tips

Start your presnap read on safety depth to confirm two high versus single high, since this out heavy concept thrives against off man and zone shells that give a cushion at the snap.

Use the pivot or return route on the right slot as your hot route answer versus press man coverage, since it creates instant separation with a quick change of direction.

Attack the flat defender with the tight out route in red on early downs to stay ahead of the chains, then move to the deeper outs on third and medium once the defense adjusts their zone drops.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Slot Slide in your call sheet so the seam routes and vertical stems keep safeties honest and prevent them from jumping the out routes.

Get the ball out quickly on the timing throw to the boundary out before user controlled defenders can flow over the top, especially against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.
